Homeopathic Treatment Considerations

Shingles is caused by the same virus as Chicken Pox. The virus may lie dormant in a nerve root in the spine for many years until reactivated by stress; when this happens, the virus multiplies and attacks the nerve, causing searing, knife-like pains along its course. A few days later the skin above the nerve erupts in itchy blisters; these generally heal within one week, but the nerve pains can last for many weeks.

Shingles has been treated by homeopathy.

Shingles requires detailed specific prescribing of the "right" homeopathic remedy.

Trial and error or shotgun prescribing does not work, and therefore we don't recommend self-medication. In fact, self-medication will complicate the overall symptom picture.

Homeopathic Treatment Considerations:

Arsenicum - Burning pains are worse between midnight and 2:00 a.m. Isolated skin eruptions become more numerous and merging together. The person is restless, anxious and exhausted. The symptoms are alleviated by warmth.
Lachesis - Left side of the body is mainly affected, with some swelling and aggravated by warmth but relieved by cold.
Ranunculus - Nerve pains and itching are made worse by the slightest movement or touch. Eating also makes symptoms worse.
Rhus tox - Red, blistered, itchy skin. Use this remedy especially if the scalp is affected or the person is young. Warmth and moving about make the symptoms unbearable.
